2017 Cresta Velia Eagle Summit Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon
96 Points
I think the 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain is every bit as successful as the 2016 yet has a touch more austerity and obvious structure. Offering terrific dark, chocolate fruit as well as resinous herbs, sage brush, and graphite aromatics, it’s medium to full-bodied, with a beautifully layered, textured mouthfeel and a great finish. Give bottles 2-3 years and enjoy over the following 15 years or more.

Another outstanding wine, the 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Rutherford almost matches the 2016 and has similar spicy blue fruits, sage brush, menthol, and floral aromas and flavors. It’s great value as well as a sure bet. Drink this pretty, medium to full-bodied, focused 2017 any time over the coming decade.
2016 Cresta Velia Eagle Summit Cabernet Sauvignon
96 Points
A small step up in price, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain offers classic Howell Mountain blue and black fruits as well as notes of sage brush, mint, and spice. It’s full-bodied, has a complex, intense bouquet, loads of ripe fruit, and the purity of fruit that makes this vintage so compelling. Drink it any time over the coming 15+ years.

I think a great value, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Rutherford comes from the northern end of this appellation (near Zinfandel Lane) and is all Cabernet aged 20 months in 90% new French oak. It has loads of spicy, peppermint, and candied black and blue fruits as well as full-bodied richness, a pretty, elegant texture, and plenty of opulent fruit. This lifted, sexy 2016 is ideal for drinking over the coming decade or so.

2015 Cresta Velia Cabernet Sauvignon
Rating 95
Based on 100% Cabernet Sauvignon brought up in 80% new French oak, the 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain from winemaker John Giannini boasts a fabulous inky color to go with loads of black and blue fruits, graphite, damp earth and spring flower/violet notes. It’s full-bodied, balanced, and elegant on the palate, with fine tannin and nothing out of place. In short, it’s a beautiful wine that will shine for 15+ years. 144 cases.

2015 Cresta Velia Cabernet Sauvignon
Rating 93
Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon gives up fragrant red and black currants notes with quite a meaty/savory undercurrent of chargrill and Marmite plus touches of incense, cedar and tobacco. Medium to full-bodied, it has a good solid frame of chewy tannins and plenty of freshness supporting the concentrated black fruits, finishing on an earthy note.

2013 Cresta Velia Cabernet Sauvignon
Rating 95
The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain is a limited production cuvée that exhibits an opaque purple color and notes of cassis and blackberry liqueur, some licorice and underlying earthy notes. It is full-bodied, rich, dense and super-impressive for a relatively new producer. This wine is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from the Eagle Summit Vineyard on Howell Mountain and was aged 20 months in 80% new French oak.
